The VNREDSat-1 satellite program has been a pivotal step in enhancing Vietnam’s partnership with France in space technology, setting the stage for advancements in next-generation satellites and strengthening domestic capabilities. The satellite, launched on May 7, 2013, marked Vietnam’s entry into Earth observation technology. Although it was initially expected to operate for five years, VNREDSat-1 continues to function efficiently in 2026, extending its service into its 14th year.
Beyond satellite operations, the program significantly contributed to Vietnam’s technological expertise. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent intensive training in both France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training empowered them to independently manage technical challenges, transitioning from merely following transferred procedures to innovating their own solutions.
Vietnam has also developed a comprehensive remote-sensing system to handle imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has provided nearly 30,000 satellite images, supporting environmental management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security activities.
Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, noted that the program has laid a crucial foundation for future satellite projects, with an emphasis on achieving greater technological self-reliance. This goal includes advancements in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems. The new phase of cooperation was highlighted during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Vietnam in May 2025, where a declaration of intent was signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies, focusing on long-term collaboration in space technology and Earth observation.
The future of this cooperation aims to increase Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. By focusing on areas like control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and selected sensors and payloads, Vietnam seeks to bolster its domestic expertise. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-developing and mastering technology, enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to independently design, operate, and develop future generations of satellite technology.
