US President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries and other facilities involved in the production and distribution of diesel. Trump warned that such strikes are exacerbating a global fuel shortage, as diesel prices in the United States have surged past $6 per gallon, marking a record high. He suggested that Ukraine should redirect its military efforts away from Russian diesel infrastructure and instead target other military assets.
Ukraine’s strategy of targeting Russia’s oil and gas sectors with long-range strikes has disrupted refining operations, contributing to fuel shortages within Russia. This comes at a time when Moscow has also imposed restrictions on diesel exports, further tightening the supply in international markets. The global shortage of diesel has been compounded by disruptions in oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, following recent tensions involving Iran. According to the International Energy Agency, diesel and gasoil exports from Gulf countries in August dwindled to just over a quarter of their levels before the conflict.
Despite Trump’s plea, Kyiv maintains that Russia’s energy industry is a crucial financial pillar for its military operations in Ukraine. As a result, Ukrainian forces continue to target Russian oil facilities, including refineries and storage sites. In response, Russia has escalated its attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, with recent overnight strikes hitting Odesa and other areas, causing casualties and damaging civilian and energy infrastructure.
Additionally, the conflict saw an exchange of large-scale drone attacks over the weekend. Russian officials reported that Ukrainian strikes targeted industrial areas, while Kyiv confirmed that Russian drones struck residential and strategic infrastructure. These ongoing hostilities underline the intensifying nature of the conflict.
As the United States approaches the November midterm elections, rising fuel prices have become a significant concern domestically. Trump’s appeal to Ukraine to curtail attacks on Russian energy facilities highlights growing worries about the war’s impact on global fuel supplies.
