The UK government is set to implement a significant financial relief measure for pubs, clubs, and live music venues across England by reducing business rates by 20% starting from April. This initiative forms part of a £100 million package designed to support high streets, lower business expenses, and assist communities in preserving local entertainment spots.
An estimated 32,000 businesses stand to gain from this relief, with the average pub expected to save approximately £1,100 each year. However, the relief is specifically targeted, excluding the largest live music venues from benefiting under the scheme.
Funding for this initiative will come from a review of the current business rate reliefs available to businesses that are deemed to have limited positive impacts on local communities, such as vape shops. Meanwhile, broader reforms to the business rates system are anticipated to be revealed in the forthcoming budget.
While business groups have welcomed the government’s move, they have also called for similar support to be extended to other parts of the hospitality sector, including restaurants, cafés, and hotels. They argue that these sectors are also facing increasing operational costs and play a crucial role in bolstering local economies.
