Sonay Kartal Upsets Jelena Ostapenko to Reach Wuhan Open Final

British tennis player Sonay Kartal has achieved a career milestone by reaching the final of the Wuhan Open, her first WTA 1000 final, after defeating Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets. Kartal, ranked No. 170 at the tournament’s outset, emerged victorious with a 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) win on Saturday, showcasing her resilience by saving six set points and coming back from deficits in both sets.

This success marks a significant comeback for the 24-year-old, who recently returned to top-level competition following a six-month hiatus due to a back injury. Kartal’s impressive performance in China includes wins over established players such as Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, and Elina Svitolina, underscoring her re-emergence as a formidable competitor on the women’s tour.

Notably, Kartal’s advancement to the final makes her the lowest-ranked player to reach a WTA 1000 final since the format’s inception in 2009. Her performance guarantees her entry into the world’s top 50 in the next rankings update, surpassing Katie Boulter to become Britain’s new No. 1 in women’s singles.

Reflecting on her match against Ostapenko, Kartal described it as one of the toughest of her career, commending her own mental fortitude. This victory follows her earlier notable achievement of reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2025, a progression that was interrupted by her injury struggles.

In the other semi-final, Maja Chwalińska of Poland defeated her compatriot Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-1. Świątek was hampered by a left-thigh injury during the match, requiring a medical timeout and playing with her leg bandaged.
