Macron Supports UK Consideration of Closer EU Ties Amid Burnham’s Remarks

French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed support for potential closer ties between the United Kingdom and the European Union, following remarks by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham. Burnham suggested that the UK might explore various options for its future relationship with the EU, including rejoining the bloc.

During a joint appearance with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Madrid, Macron noted that a renewed UK-EU partnership would be beneficial for all involved. Sánchez also voiced approval for the prospect of stronger relations between the UK and EU member countries.

Prime Minister Burnham’s comments indicate that the UK is considering a range of possibilities for its EU relations, from establishing a closer trading arrangement and customs union to potentially regaining single-market membership or returning as a full EU member.

Macron emphasized that any move towards closer alignment with the EU should involve the UK accepting the rules and obligations associated with the bloc’s internal market. He highlighted Britain’s past role as a significant partner within the EU, underscoring the potential advantages of rekindled cooperation.

The European Union has stated that it is up to the UK government to decide on its desired future relationship with the bloc. EU officials have also indicated their openness to discussions on the matter. Both the UK and EU are preparing for an upcoming summit in Brussels, where their relationship will be a key topic of discussion.
