IndiGo Halts Mumbai-Manchester Flights Due to Cost and Airspace Issues

IndiGo, India’s leading airline, has announced it will temporarily halt its Mumbai-Manchester route starting August 31, 2026, due to ongoing airspace restrictions, extended flight durations, and escalating operating costs. This decision comes as the airline faces a challenging international aviation environment, influenced by geopolitical tensions, rising fuel prices, and route disruptions that have driven up the costs of long-haul operations.

The airline will be returning one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways as part of this route suspension. These aircraft were initially acquired in early 2025 to support IndiGo’s expansion into European markets while awaiting the delivery of its own Airbus A350 fleet. Despite the suspension of the Manchester service, IndiGo has assured that its other long-haul international routes will continue as planned.

IndiGo’s expansion into Europe has seen strong demand, bolstering the airline’s presence in critical international markets. However, the combination of longer flight times due to airspace limitations, the rising cost of aviation turbine fuel, and currency fluctuations have rendered the Manchester route financially untenable. Abhijit Dasgupta, Senior Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management, acknowledged the decision as unfortunate but necessary given the current market conditions, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to resume the service when circumstances improve.

The airline is actively exploring alternative strategies to maintain its partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways while progressing its long-term international expansion plans. Passengers impacted by the route suspension will be informed in advance and offered support, including rebooking options or refunds as applicable. IndiGo remains optimistic about its future in international markets and is focused on optimizing its operations amid the evolving challenges of the aviation industry.
