Google Revives Glasses and Enhances Search with AI Upgrade

In a significant leap forward for its search capabilities, Google has announced the integration of advanced artificial intelligence into its globally dominant search bar. Revealed at the annual Google I/O conference for software developers, the tech giant plans to enhance its search box to handle longer, more conversational queries, directing users to interact with Google’s chatbot. This shift is powered by Google’s latest AI model, Gemini 3.5, which was unveiled at the same event. The new AI enhancements promise to provide more visual results and suggestions, such as creating calendar invites or spreadsheet plans, thus fundamentally transforming the user experience.

Elizabeth Reid, overseeing Google Search, described the updates as the most significant in nearly 30 years. The rollout of these changes is set for both desktop and mobile users worldwide. A promotional video showcased a new interface that blends visual enhancements with AI-generated overviews, deviating from the traditional list of links. Users will still have the option to revert to the conventional search format by selecting the “Web” tab. The introduction of the “AI Mode” has seen significant engagement, with chatbot-specific queries doubling each quarter since its launch.

Josh Woodward, in charge of developing the Gemini AI, expressed that the ultimate goal is to create a “universal assistant” that is both personal and proactive. Despite currently having 900 million monthly users for the Gemini app, this figure trails behind ChatGPT’s weekly user base. Google’s addition of AI agents to its search capabilities marks a significant step toward making this technology accessible to everyday consumers, beyond the tech-savvy niche. Subscribers to Google’s AI Pro and Ultra plans will benefit from “information agents,” AI bots capable of conducting thorough research and generating summaries or action plans. Additionally, the “generative user interface” will allow for customized visuals and interactive elements based on user requests.

In a nod to its past, Google is venturing into smart eyewear once again, collaborating with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster to launch a new line of “intelligent eyewear” this fall. These sunglasses and eyeglasses are designed to respond to voice commands and capture photos or videos with built-in cameras. This initiative follows Google’s previous attempt with Google Glass, which launched in 2014 but faced public ridicule and was subsequently discontinued. With shifting attitudes towards augmented reality, Meta has already established a presence in this space with its Ray-Ban Meta glasses, developed in partnership with EssilorLuxottica since 2021. Google’s latest foray into smart glasses, including a second model with in-lens display capabilities known as Project Aura, indicates a renewed focus on this burgeoning market.
