China’s U17 women’s soccer team achieved a historic milestone by reaching the quarterfinals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over France. The match, held in Rabat, ended in a goalless draw, leading to a tense 4-3 win on penalties for China.
Goalkeeper Niu Ziqi was the standout performer, playing a pivotal role in China’s victory by making two crucial saves during the shootout. Niu’s first save came against Lea Motyka, helping set the tone for China’s success. After both teams were locked at 2-2 in penalties, Yang Lan and Cheng Wandi scored for China. Niu then secured the win with another save against Lisa Mabilon.
Throughout regular time, both teams found it difficult to capitalize on scoring opportunities. France dominated the first half but was unable to convert their chances into goals. China’s performance improved in the second half following strategic adjustments by coach Ma Xiaoxu, yet neither side managed to break the deadlock, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
China entered the knockout phase with strong momentum, having topped Group E with a flawless record. The team showcased their prowess by defeating Kenya 3-0, Samoa 7-0, and the United States 3-2 in the group stage.
Looking ahead, China will face Brazil in the quarterfinals on November 1. Brazil advanced to the last eight after overcoming Poland 8-7 in a penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting encounter.
