British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who is preparing to step down, has secured a significant diplomatic achievement by finalizing the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This development occurred just before Starmer announced his resignation. During discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the fringes of the G7 Summit in 2026, both leaders agreed to set July 15 as the date for implementing the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This agreement is poised to enhance trade relations between the two nations, which currently have an annual trade value of approximately £48 billion.
Starmer has been a staunch advocate for strengthening ties with India, making the trade deal a cornerstone of his administration’s goals. He emphasized the agreement as a vital opportunity for economic expansion, acknowledging India’s growing influence in the global economy and the advantages of facilitating easier and more cost-effective trade between the UK and India. Since taking the helm of the Labour Party after its 2019 electoral defeat, Starmer has worked diligently to restore connections with the British Indian community and bolster the partnership with India.
Under Starmer’s leadership, the Labour Party pledged to enhance collaboration with India across various sectors such as trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives. Before his political career, Starmer had a distinguished background in law, serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. He rose to the position of Prime Minister after Labour’s decisive victory in the 2024 election. Although he initially succeeded in stabilizing the UK economy and pushing forward domestic reforms, a series of policy hurdles and political challenges eventually eroded his support.
In a heartfelt resignation address, Starmer acknowledged that his parliamentary colleagues no longer saw him as the appropriate leader to guide Labour into the upcoming general election. He expressed his acceptance of their decision with respect and gratitude, marking the conclusion of a notable era in British politics.
